Spine researchers from Ulm, Germany (Häusler et al. 2010; Hartwig et al. 2004) studied the mechanics of the cervical spine in crashes. They conducted an experiment that impressively demonstrated which structures of the cervical spine are damaged and how much acceleration is required for this to happen.
